Disappointed by the events in Russia, Robert returned to the US to resume work with Frank Sturgis on the nonfiction The Sturgis Files: Lies Our Fathers Told Us. In addition to his book and screenplay proposals, he again was recruited back into his anti-Castro work. Among other assignments, Robert drafted an innovative concept aimed at forcing Cuban Premier Fidel Castro out of power using psychological warfare techniques with minimal force. In that capacity, Robert, AKA “Comandante Beto” accompanied Sturgis to secret guerrilla training camps where anti-Castro agent provocateurs were being trained. Had their resulting proposals been adopted they may well have provided the first “bloodless” coup in Cuban history.
However, in late November 1993, Frank Sturgis died too suddenly. Most anti-Castro Cuban leaders in Miami agreed that he had been assassinated but the American doctors at the veteran’s hospital assured everyone that he had succumbed to cancer. However, and unlike most cancer victims, Frank had not been ill enough to be hospitalized.....
Sturgis would never see the fruits of his labor to free the Cuban people. For all practical purposes, “Beto” was also buried with him.
